Innovation Hub
Terranova's Innovation Hub was established with the aim of ensuring excellent standards of quality, safety and innovative technology, providing the company with increasingly high-performance solutions.
We hare proud to have created a true collaborative ecosystem based on knowledge sharing, with the goals of monitoring and evaluating new technologies (AI, but not only), supporting the process of Radical Innovation (OI) and developing a network of partners.

Chief Innovation Officer
Lucio Machetti
In addition to being CIO of the Terranova Group, Lucio has been a Board Member of HPA (an accredited spin-off of the University of Verona and Artificial Intelligence Competence Center (AICC) of Terranova) since 2021. In 2024, he became a Board Member of DNA Ambiente, a group integrating five innovative waste management companies and part of the Terranova Group.
With more than 15 years of experience in the IoT industry as Head of R&D, Lucio Machetti leads teams through the conception, incubation, development and implementation of cutting-edge software solutions incorporating mobile platforms, Cloud, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. Lucio is responsible for defining strategy, setting priorities, executing projects, and working with stakeholders.
In our Innovation Hub we strongly believe in the Open Innovation approach. Over the years we have built a collaborative ecosystem based on knowledge sharing, a space where we have created partnerships that accelerate the innovation process and enable us to develop solutions that exceed market standards.
Open Innovation
We work with with research organizations, universities and start-ups from around the world, with the common goal of creating solutions that enable us to revolutionize the world of Utilities.
AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR IDENTIFYING FRAUD, LEAKS, OR TAMPERING IN THE GAS DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
A project in collaboration with Professor Francesco Belardinelli, Imperial College London
We set ourselves the goal of identifying fraud, leaks, or tampering in gas networks in real time, so that we can manage the network efficiently and safely. This is a particularly complex challenge, because it requires the timely processing of large volumes of data from devices distributed across the territory and the ability to quickly distinguish abnormal events from simple operational variations.
PRODUCING IN-DEPTH REPORTS IN REAL TIME TO FACILITATE THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS
A project in collaboration with Professor Héctor Menendez, King's College London
We set ourselves the goal of allowing users to create dynamic reports simply by describing their needs in natural language. This approach represents a quantum leap in terms of user experience, because it eliminates the need to know complex technical tools or structured query languages. Enabling natural interaction with the system also allows non-technical users to independently access data, formulate specific requests, and obtain immediate answers, significantly improving decision-making speed.
OUR INNOVATION GOALS
▶ Artificial Intelligence: Developing algorithms that revolutionize business processes
▶ Performance: Highly scalable and parallelizable architectures through the use of innovative technologies
▶ UX: Desktop, Mobile and Web GUIs designed to optimize the user experience
▶ IoT: Multi-commodity proprietary laboratory, very high scalability, device agnosticity
▶ Cybersecurity: Periodic Vulnerability Assessments on all products, advanced tools integrated in the development process
OUR AI-BASED INNOVATION GOALS
▶ NLP: Ability to understand natural language and interact through it (automatic ticket classification, voice assistants, search suggestions)
▶ Forecasting: Predict future trends (Churn, Predictive maintenance, Consumption reconstruction, Network regulation)
▶ Constraint Optimisation: Operational research engine supported by Artificial Intelligence routines
(Route optimizer)
▶ Image Recognition & Computer Vision: Ability to analyze, process and transform unstructured data (Augmented Reality, Extraction of info from images)
▶ Anomaly detection: Identify data anomalies, also thanks to advanced clustering (Plausibility of measures)
TOGETHER TO INNOVATE THE WAY WE ORGANIZE FIELD OPERATIONS IN FSM
A project in collaboration with Professor Francesca Toni, Imperial College London
Organizing the activities of field operators is essential for managing available resources as efficiently as possible, thereby ensuring a very high quality of service for operators. The project we have developed together not only seeks to provide a concrete answer to this problem, but also seeks to do so by finding a way to explain this solution to human operators as clearly as possible.
Technology Vision Terranova
We develop reliable solutions that anticipate the future. Each one designed to generate positive and lasting impact on a global scale with performance and confidence.
We believe that collaboration among teams nurtures consistency, growth, and continuous innovation to accompany clients on their digitization journey with technology solutions that are curated in detail.
OUR SMART CITY LAB
Our Smart City Lab is located in our Grosseto office and is a simulation of the gas, electricity, and water distribution network in which all devices are connected to our data acquisition center and managed by our portals. Our team uses the laboratory to carry out tests and ensure the highest quality standards for the solutions we offer to the market.
