Terranova presents the case of Como Acqua, a multi-brand and multi-technology smart water metering project. The focus of the synergy with the Lombardy-based company is the ability of Terranova's smart metering software to synthesise the management of multiple communication technologies and meter models into a single platform while ensuring process efficiency and regulatory compliance.

The context
With the entry into force of TIMSII (2021), priorities in the water sector have changed rapidly, and Como Acqua immediately focused its attention on the goal of digitalisation. Districtisation and water balance have made it necessary to acquire new tools for data collection and compliance with the new regulations. The PNRR, to which the Como-based company had access, also enabled the procurement of 70,000 water meters, 70% of which use LoRaWAN technology and the remaining 30% NB-IoT technology, chosen by the water distributor to start the remote reading process.
The dual and simultaneous communication technology required Como Acqua to adopt a smart metering platform capable of integrating different brands and models of devices, but above all different technologies, in order to avoid its operators having to use different platforms to remotely read the meters.

The project
When evaluating a meter manufacturer, we are often offered internally produced SACs and MDMs as a marketing lever. These are excellent products, but they are often only suitable for their own meters and, in situations such as ours, where we need to manage different brands and technologies of smart meters, this is not a viable solution. Terranova's smart metering system solves this problem very efficiently: every smart meter on the market is integrated – or can be integrated in a few weeks – and it is possible to manage the entire fleet, as heterogeneous as it is, directly from the same platform. This facilitates and standardises the work of Como Acqua's entire operational structure.

With Terranova, Como Acqua has already successfully started managing over 35,000 domestic water smart meters out of the total 70,000 assigned in the tender. In addition to domestic users, the entire project also includes large users and wastewater management.
